Known as the “little
crown jewel of Kumarakom,” the Taj Garden
Retreat sparkles with indescribable beauty.
Located next to the Vembanad lake and a bird
sanctuary, the Taj Garden Retreat is 14 km from
Kottayam, and is accessible by both land and
water. The hotel, equipped with Internet access,
can convert a guest room into a meeting area

inspired English Missionary Henry Baker, in
the late 19th century, to acquire land on the
banks of Vembanad Lake. Today, it is known as
the Taj Garden Retreat, Kumarakom.
Often referred to as the little
jewel of Kumarakom, it still maintains the
beauty of its rustic surroundings. The 123-year-old
colonial bungalow houses newly built Luxury
Villas, heritage rooms, charming cottages,
and quaint houseboats, anchored in the private
lagoon. At this idyllic retreat, guests can
look forward to practicing the Art of doing

Location of the hotel
The
drive to Thekkady itself is enchanting as the
road winds through tranquil countryside, rich
plantations & thick jungles. The sanctuary,
60 km from Idukki, 190 km from Cochin and 114
kms away from Kottayam is open throughout the
year, but the best season is from September
to March. The sanctuary is centred around the
large (24 sq km) artificial lake formed by a
dam across the Periyar river. The main attraction
is a boat trip over this man-made lake of Thekkady.
The forest department would also arrange elephant
rides and trekking inside the sanctuary.
By Road:
There are frequent buses from Kumily (4 km
away).
