name Kamyakam is taken from the great Indian
epic - the Mahabharatha. It's believed to be
an evergreen island forest where the Pandavas
stayed during their exile. The myth goes that,
during their exile the Pandavas along with their
wife Draupathi came to stay at Kamyakam. As
the Gods were pleased with the virtuous Pandavas,
the island forest was bestowed with all the
facilities and luxuries so that the Pandavas
can lead a totally happy life there. A fifteen
minute journey by boat from the high court junction
will take you to Kothad - the island where Kamyakam
Haven is situated. In accordance with the myth,
Kamyakam Haven is positioned as a complete luxury
backwater resort, an island far from the humdrum
of the city, yet too near with easy accessibility.
The resort is built in the most eco-friendly

is one among the fourteen islands in the Periyar
river basin in Vembanad Lake. According to history,
these islands were formed as a result of a great
flood in the 1340s. Known as Pearl Islands (the
pearls on the necklace of the Queen of Arabian
Sea - Kochi), these small yet beautiful islands
are a real treat to one's eyes. Kamyakam Haven
is on the southern side of the island on-looking
the water highway. Even the route to Kamyakam
Haven by boat gives the visitor an unforgettable
experience - with the rural life on one side
and the urban on the other. One can see the
sharply outlined silhouette of the main building
from the boat itself. The Resort is also easily
accessible by road from the mainland.
The Locale: The main occupation of the local
inhabitants are agriculture and fishing. Of
the total area of the islands, only 16% is land
and the rest, are paddy fields and streams.
During rainy season, the fields are used for
paddy cultivation and in summer, after the harvest,
saline water is filled in and traditional prawn
farming is done. The fields used for prawn farming
are called Chemmeen Kettu. Other traditional
activities of the area are coir processing,
clay utensil( the renowned handmade Moolampally
Chatty belongs to this place) and brick manufacturing,
houseboat construction, etc.

breeze and the cradle like movement of the boat

A cruise into the countryside in a houseboat
(Kettuvallam) with cozy living rooms, furnished
bedrooms, modern toilets, a kitchen and open
sit-outs to experience a starry moonlit sky
– offers a close look into the delightful
rustic life. The more adventurous can even take
a canoe out into the tranquil lakes, and armed
with a fishing rod, catch an exotic Karimeen.

For The Gourmets: The open restaurant, a class
of its own, is built in between the internal
lake and the swimming pool. Aesthetically conceived
and designed to arouse the appetite with colonial
furnishing, soft music, pleasant aroma and mystic
lighting, the restaurant serves Continental,
Chinese, North Indian and Kerala cuisine –
with delicacies rich in spices: the Malabar
Fish Curry, Syrian Christian Duck Roast, Karimeen
Pollichathu, Chemmeen Varuthathu, Konchu Curry
– to name a few. One can enjoy the fresh
